 Nail Trimming (Sep 1-Sep 8)
« Thread Started on Sept 2, 2008, 12:55am »

How do you make this much dreaded task more tolerable?
What tools do you use? (dremmel tool *Peticure*, regular clippers)
How does your dog tolerate nail trimming?
Do you have any tricks/tips you use?
Feel free to share any experiences you may have!!

I read on the Puppy Phases that a member posted, that at a young age, when puppy has something traumatic happen to them at a young age, they don't forget it. And I've learned this the hard way.

Brutus, when he was 4 months old, went into the vet for a set of shots and the vet went ahead and clipped his nails for me. She accidently cut into the quick. Brutus let out a yelp and bled quite a bit.

Before that happened, I never had an issue clipping his nails. He would let me do it without putting up a fight. Ever since that happened, nail clipping is a chore all in itself. I've tried everything from giving him a treat before and after, to playing with his paws all the time to get him used to it, to just taking his paw and not letting go until he calms down. brutus will cry, scream, and yelp like someone is trying to murder him when it comes time to clip nails.

Now I have been using the regular clippers. But I'm considering investing in the dremmel tool-like clippers advertised on tv. has anyone used it? Do you like it? Or do you have any other tips on trimming nails to make it a more peaceful occurance?

I have a friend that used to raise Labs yeeaarrrss ago and he used a dremmel tool. Now they have small dogs and are debating on getting the new *Petacure*. He said that on the Labs the dremmel worked great because the heat created by the grinding automatically cauterized the blood vessel if you got it too short.

I have worked for 2 vets plus my mom has worked for some so we know how to cut the nails I like to do em my own.

I'm old fashion i guess you could say I use the clippers I would like to use the dremmel but I have yet to buy it.

Me I just lay my dog on her side grab her paw and talk to her while i'll do it tell her what a good girl she is when i finish the 1st paw i pet her n praise her for being a good girl.

Today was katanas FIRST toe nail clipping she did REALLY well by the time i got to the back feet she was PASSED out BUT I have had some dogs that will bit the tar outta you HATE their toes being done I just try to go it fast and painless. I try to take my time so I do not make her bleed but also try to get it done fast. With dogs that dont like to have it done I do try to go ALOT slower and talk sweet to em pet em praise ALOT when i'm done with either that toe OR foot

XD I'm always terrified I'll hurt Gemini, so I just take her to Petsmart. $8 to get her nails trimmed.

It's especially hard on dogs with black nails is, because you can't see where the vein begins.
