I find myself faced with dealing with some arthritic problems with my elderly australian shepherd who's 12 yrs old. He's definitely slowing down & it's heartbreaking for me. He's not real bad, I've def seen a lot worse, but he does have a hard time getting up after lying down. He still loves going for short walks, which I try to keep up daily, but he did have some problems with him limping over the summer when we would spend week-ends up at the river & were walking a lot, so we keep our walks fairly short now. He's always slept in my bedroom at nite, which is up a long, narrow flight of stairs, & while he still insists on going up each nite, it's painful for me to watch him climb the stairs. I don't coax him up, or call him, but without fail I hear him scratching at my door 1/2 hr or an hour after I retire for the nite, & I get up & let him in. I took him in for a vet exam today & he recommended I start George on 500 mg of glucosamine (sp?) 2x a day & after awhile he suggested I start him on injections of adaquan (sp?). This is just something I've never personally dealt with before & I just want to make Georgies life as good as I possibly can. Has anyone else dealt with arthritis in their elderly dog?
