senior dog slowing down « Result #6 on Nov 20, 2008, 2:56pm »
I find myself faced with dealing with some arthritic problems with my elderly australian shepherd who's 12 yrs old. He's definitely slowing down & it's heartbreaking for me. He's not real bad, I've def seen a lot worse, but he does have a hard time getting up after lying down. He still loves going for short walks, which I try to keep up daily, but he did have some problems with him limping over the summer when we would spend week-ends up at the river & were walking a lot, so we keep our walks fairly short now. He's always slept in my bedroom at nite, which is up a long, narrow flight of stairs, & while he still insists on going up each nite, it's painful for me to watch him climb the stairs. I don't coax him up, or call him, but without fail I hear him scratching at my door 1/2 hr or an hour after I retire for the nite, & I get up & let him in. I took him in for a vet exam today & he recommended I start George on 500 mg of glucosamine (sp?) 2x a day & after awhile he suggested I start him on injections of adaquan (sp?). This is just something I've never personally dealt with before & I just want to make Georgies life as good as I possibly can. Has anyone else dealt with arthritis in their elderly dog?

Re: Regular Collar VS. Harness « Result #10 on Nov 6, 2008, 11:31pm »
When walking my dogs, they learn on the prong collar. I refuse for them to walk me and it's the only style that seems to get their attention as in whos in what role. One of four of my dogs are able to now use a flat collar (or casual collar as I call it). All of my dogs where casual collars unless they are being walked.
The only time I ever used harnessess was when I owned a pick up truck and lived in California. It is law there that one must secure their dogs when they are in the bed of the truck, so my two G.Shep/Rotts were harnessed and centered in the truck.
